    Reading word lists

    Sight words and phonics patterns

Sight words are the common words readers should know on sight. Phonics lists group words by spelling pattern so children practice one sound at a time. Print a list to read aloud and check off, or print flash cards to cut out.

    Using these at home

    Short, steady practice works best

    Keep it short

Ten to fifteen focused minutes is plenty. Stop while your child still feels successful, and pick it up again tomorrow.

    Read it out loud

For word lists, have your child read each word aloud and check off the ones they read without sounding out. Practice the rest with flash cards.

    Look at the mistakes

Turn on the answer key after your child finishes. If the same kind of mistake keeps showing up, that's the skill to work on next.
