Frequently asked questions

How matching, ratings, payments and vetting work at Mighty Minds, for parents and for tutors. Can't find your answer? Email [email protected] or book a free consultation.

For parents

Finding a tutor

Searching, posting a request and the first consultation are free.

How much does tutoring cost?

Each tutor sets their own rate, which is shown on their profile. [Add Diane's rate or a typical range once confirmed.] The first consultation is always free.

How are tutors vetted?

Every tutor passes five checks before their profile goes live: a credential check, a criminal background check, two professional references, an interview with a sample lesson for our founder Diane, and a profile review. Parents rate tutors after sessions, and we follow up on anything below five stars.

Where do sessions happen?

In your home, at a public place like a library, or online. You choose when you book.

What grades and subjects do you teach?

Math and reading for grades 2 to 5: place value, regrouping, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals, plus phonics, fluency and comprehension.

How long is a session?

[Confirm: most sessions are 60 minutes.] Each one ends with a short progress note for parents.

What if the tutor isn't the right fit?

We'll rematch you with another tutor at no charge.

Do you help with STAAR?

Yes. Our sessions follow the Texas TEKS, which is what STAAR tests, so regular tutoring builds the skills your child needs. [Confirm before publishing whether to offer dedicated STAAR prep.]

How do I pay?

Online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. You get a receipt by email. Payments are processed securely by Stripe.

How does matching work?

There are two ways. Browse vetted tutors on Find a tutor and contact the one you like, or post a request with your child's grade, subject and schedule. Tutors whose grades, subjects and schedule fit will ask to be matched, and you pick the one you like after seeing their profile, credentials and ratings from other parents. You can say no to anyone, or close your request at any time.

Who can see my request?

Only vetted Mighty Minds tutors can browse requests. They see the grade, subject, skills, general area and schedule. Your name and contact details are shared only with the tutor you accept.

How do ratings work?

After each month of sessions, you rate your tutor and your tutor rates your family. Neither side sees the other's rating until both are in, so every rating is honest. Your tutor's average shows on their profile, and your family's average is shown to tutors when you post a request. Leave a rating.

What if we need to cancel a session?

Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice are charged in full, and the tutor is paid as if the session happened. Give at least 24 hours' notice whenever you can.

How does refer-a-friend work?

When a family you refer books their first month, you both get a free session. Just have them enter your name when they sign up.

For tutors

Teaching with us

You set your rate and hours. The only fee is $25 per new family, after their first paid session.

Do I need a teaching certificate?

A teaching certificate or a degree in a related field is required. Experienced tutors without a certificate may still qualify with a relevant degree and strong references.

How much can I earn?

You set your own hourly rate. Mighty Minds takes nothing from your sessions. The only fee is a one-time $25 per new family, charged after their first paid session.

Is there a cost to apply?

[Confirm: a $35 background-check fee, refunded after your 10th paid session.]

Can I keep my own students?

Yes. You're an independent contractor, and students you had before joining stay yours.

Can I tutor online from anywhere?

Online tutors can live anywhere in Texas. In-home and library sessions are in the Dickinson area.

How long does vetting take?

Most applicants finish in about two weeks: credential check, background check, references, a video interview with a 15-minute sample lesson for Diane, and then your profile goes live.

How do I find students?

Once your profile is live, browse families' requests and ask to be matched with a short note on how you'd help. Parents searching Find a tutor can also contact you directly. When a family says yes, you get their contact details and book the first session through Mighty Minds.

How do ratings work?

After each month of sessions, the parent rates you and you rate the family. Neither side sees the other's rating until both are in. Your average shows on your profile, and a family's average shows on their requests. Rate a family.

What if a family cancels?

Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice are charged in full, and you're paid as if the session happened.
